This becomes especially dangerous when the tree is tall enough to reach your roof or windows. Cracks in the Trunk or Major Limbs Cracks or splits in a tree’s trunk or large branches are red flags. If you suspect a tree on your property is dead, it’s important to recognize the warning signs and take action before it becomes a problem. No Leaves or Unusual Leaf Loss One of the most obvious signs of a dead tree is a lack of leaves during the growing season.
